4 Things You Should Not Do When Pulled Over For DUI

Seeing police lights behind your vehicle probably is not the thing you hoped for if you are driving after having a few cocktails, but if you see lights, you must pull over. If you have never encountered a problem like this before, you should realize that there are some important things you should never do, and here are four of them.

Try to outrun the police

The thought of outrunning the police might come into your head, as at the time this might make sense to you; however, this is not a good thing to do. The police will catch you if you do this, and you will face even more criminal charges by attempting to flee the scene when the police pulled you over.

Act like a jerk

Secondly, you should not act like a jerk when you are pulled over. The police officer that pulled you over has a reason for the traffic stop, and if you were drinking while driving, the officer may have witnessed you swerve or something like that. Officers do not typically just pull people over for no reason, and therefore, you should not be rude in any way. You should be calm with the officer and respectful no matter how you feel at the time.

Refuse to follow the requests of the officer

Another thing you should not do is refuse to follow the request the officer has for you. Once the officer walks up to your window, he or she might instantly smell alcohol. If so, the officer will likely ask you to step out of the car to perform a series of basic tests. This is called a field sobriety test, and you should try to complete the test if asked to do it. If asked to take a breathalyzer, you should also willingly do this too.

Offer the officer a bribe

The fourth thing you should never do when pulled over for drinking is offer a bribe to the officer. While you might encounter some crooked cops, most are not crooked, and if you offer a bribe you might end up facing more charges for your crime.
