What To Expect With A DUI When You Drive For A Living

Joshua Alexander

Getting charged with a DUI can have a variety of consequences. One of the biggest, aside from potential jail time, is the amount of money you will have to put out to get yourself back into proper driving shape. Aside from paying for an attorney to represent you, you will be expected to pay for court costs, increased vehicle insurance, driving classes, and other expenses.

What can complicate matters even more is if your job depends on your ability to drive. If your work requires you to drive and you get a DUI, you could be in some serious trouble. The following is some information on different jobs and licenses that require a clean record and what you will need to do:

Drive Share Programs

Driving for a drive share program, such as Uber, is a great way to make some extra money. Some drivers even drive enough to make a full-time income. However, if you are given a DUI, you may find yourself in a bad spot with the program.

All drive share programs will do a thorough background check before you begin, but many will conduct them throughout your partnership as well. If your name shows a DUI, they can and most likely will dismiss you from the program. This can result in a serious loss of income.

Commercial Drivers

Working as a commercial driver requires a CDL. Once obtained, you will be able to drive tractor trailers, school or city busses, and the like. Getting a DUI with a job requiring a CDL is a major problem. Depending on who you are working for, you can find yourself without a job even after a suspension of your CDL is up.

One thing to keep in mind is that it does not matter if you are driving a commercial vehicle or your own car when you get a DUI. If you are convicted, you can lose your CDL for an extended amount of time, or even permanently in some cases, like if you are charged with a second offense DUI. This means you are not going to be able to drive any type of commercial vehicle until it is reinstated. There is no restricted CDL option, so you will have to find alternative employment until your license is reinstated.

If your livelihood depends on your ability to drive, it is crucial that you do all you can to avoid a DUI. If you do receive a DUI, you will need to work with an attorney, like one from Pollack & Ball LLC, to satisfy all the requirements to hopefully return to work.
